The book of Ruth is set in the time of Judges. In the Septuagint Ruth comes after Judges. Judges 21:25 should be ringing in our ears: In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit. It is a dangerous time. It was Israel’s equivalent of the wild west.
God’s sovereignty plays a huge theme throughout the book.
The main character (after God of course) of the book doesn’t seem to be Ruth. It’s Naomi. The book begins and ends with Naomi. Naomi’s desolation at the loss of her husband and 2 sons (ch. 1) through to Naomi bouncing Obed on her knee (ch. 4) with the women saying ‘Naomi has a son!’
In the storyline of the OT Ruth tells us:
1. How God raised up King David from the mess of Israel in the time of the Judges.
2. How a Moabite ended up in the genealogy of David.
